It's always assumed that just because the bride is usually in one, the female guests have to wear a dress too. As long as your outfit is appropriate for the tone of the wedding, there is no reason why you can't wear the trousers - which sound fantastic by the way! - that you suggested. Plus, you can be secretly smug knowing that you are also on-trend, as dresses are being pushed aside this autumn/winter, in favour of various styles of tailored trousers. For this occasion, the main thing to focus on is what to wear on top and on your feet - plus midnight blue is such a gorgeous colour for night, that you'll want to make sure you don't look too evening-y.
A feminine, patterned blouse would be my first port of call. You could blow the budget completely out of the water by purchasing this chiffon, floral print blouse from Chloé but then what would you tell the bride when you attend empty-handed?! Instead keep some money back for the present, and try out a slightly wild approach with this printed, python-look sleeveless blouse from Dorothy Perkins. Ward off any chilly breezes with a cropped jacket or elegant, pale-coloured knit like this one from Phase Eight.
If animal print is pushing the boundaries a bit for a wedding, but you still want to make a statement, try one of Celia Birtwell's, '70s-inspired pieces for Topshop - the rose print blouse will look great with midnight blue - or opt for a tonal colour mix with this bow neck blouse from the By Malene Birger label.
So with your top half sorted, suitable footwear should fall easily into place. As these last two blouses have been particularly voluminous, I would contrast their style with chunky heels - these maroon, lace bow platforms by Katia Lombardo make a change from black and are absolutely to-die-for. However, if you want to go for something a little lower - and cheaper - try these grey Amarie peep-toes from Warehouse. Stick to the old rules and choose a clutch that matches your shoes, then finish your outfit with a statement ring or eye-catching earrings.
